The area is part of a community site designated by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development Order No. 1964 of December 13, 2007 (establishing the status of a protected natural area within the Natura 2000 network in Romania), covering an area of 44,284 hectares. The site comprises a diverse natural area (coniferous forests, deciduous forests, mixed forests, arable land, natural meadows, steppes, pastures, vineyards, and orchards) within the alpine and continental bioregions of the northwestern Călimani Mountains, part of the Eastern Carpathian range. This area includes protected areas: Cheile Bistriței Ardelene, Comarnic Nature Reserve, Stâncile Tătarului, Călimani Mountains, Tăul Zânelor, Râpa Verde, Râpa Mare Fossil Site, Piatra Corbului, Piatra Cușmei, and Valea Repedea.
