Lacu Roșu (Red Lake) is one of the most spectacular natural destinations in Harghita County and in the entire Eastern Carpathians region. Located about 26 km from the town of Gheorgheni, the lake lies at the foothills of the Hășmaș Mountains and represents an important attraction for tourists visiting the famous Bicaz Gorge – Red Lake area.
The lake was formed in 1837 following a landslide that blocked the course of a mountain stream. Its name comes from the reddish sediments carried by the Roșu stream, as well as from the reflections of the tree trunks submerged in the water. These tree trunks, still visible above the lake surface today, create a unique and easily recognizable landscape.
The area is ideal for walks, hiking and outdoor activities. Visitors can rent boats to explore the lake or follow mountain trails in the Hășmaș Mountains. Nearby you can also visit the spectacular Bicaz Gorge, one of the most impressive natural formations in Romania, known for its towering cliffs and winding mountain road.
