Cârțișoara is a locality situated in the southern part of Sibiu County, approximately 45 km from the city of Sibiu, along the national road DN7C, at the base of the famous Transfăgărășan highway. Located at the foothills of the Făgăraș Mountains, the commune is considered the main northern gateway to the alpine area of the massif.
Cârțișoara is well known for its strategic position on the Transfăgărășan, one of the most spectacular mountain roads in Europe. From the village begins the hiking trail to Bâlea Waterfall and further towards Bâlea Lake, situated at over 2,000 meters altitude.
